“Because once you pick these Water-Leap Fruits, you’ll be swarmed by wild pet beasts nearby.”
Yuan Jiewen explained steadily, “Although these Water-Leap Fruits can only be consumed by water-type pet beasts, it seems like they’re protected by all the surrounding wild pet beasts.”
He paused, then added:
“There was once a five-man team, four of them were C-rank beastmasters, and one was even a B-rank powerhouse. They came here and tried picking the Water-Leap Fruits. The result? Wild pet beasts from the sea, land, and air all swarmed them. In the end, even an Emperor-level beast appeared.”
“No way around it. A B-rank powerhouse can handle a single Emperor-level beast, but having to protect four other people while fighting against waves of wild beasts? He had no choice but to throw away the Water-Leap Fruits and flee. This incident was even posted on the forum for Secret Realm 88 for a while.”
As they spoke, Little Treasure suddenly performed a Spatial Shift, appearing beside the fruit tree, stretching out his sinister claw.
“Don’t pick it!” Qiao Sang’s heart tightened and she hurriedly shouted.
“Xun…”
Little Treasure silently withdrew his claw.
Qiao Sang let out a sigh of relief, then continued the earlier topic: “Is there anything special about these Water-Leap Fruits?”
Yuan Jiewen thought for a moment, then said, “I once saw a post saying there’s a water-type pet beast living in this pool. It has extremely strong healing skills, and whenever the wild pet beasts around here get injured, they come to it for treatment.”
“The Water-Leap Fruits are under its protection, so none of the surrounding wild beasts allow outsiders to pick them.”
“Of course, this hasn’t been verified. No one knows who posted it, and I only stumbled on it by chance. The post sank quickly.” After explaining, Yuan Jiewen asked:
“Boss, what do we do now?”
Qiao Sang pondered for a moment and said, “We’ll sleep here.”
Yuan Jiewen: ???
Mikayla glanced at Qiao Sang after hearing this.
Yuan Jiewen suddenly thought of something, his face showing hesitation.
He held back for a long time before finally blurting out: “Boss, don’t tell me you’re planning to use yourself as bait?”
“Just to test. It’s not certain if we can lure out the beast that took Liu Bo.” Qiao Sang replied calmly.
“If it doesn’t appear, we’ll move to the spot where Lin Bo last sent out his distress signal.”
“T-That’s too risky, isn’t it?” Yuan Jiewen’s expression shifted through multiple emotions.
The most terrifying enemy is the unknown. Back then, he hadn’t even heard a single sound before Lin Bo vanished. If something happened to the boss, how could he and this clearly weaker breeder make it out of this secret realm safely?
Qiao Sang looked at him.
“Do you have a better idea? Or do you know where the beast that took Liu Bo is?”
Yuan Jiewen fell silent.
He neither had a better plan, nor did he know which beast took Liu Bo. Let alone where it was…
“Where did you guys sleep last time?” Qiao Sang asked.
Yuan Jiewen pointed to a spot about five meters from the pool.
“Right there.”
Qiao Sang led Yabao to the spot Yuan Jiewen pointed to and nodded at him.
“Yap!”
Yabao understood his beast master’s intent. He placed his paw on the grass and closed his eyes.
Qiao Sang followed, closing her eyes as well.
“Boss, you…” Yuan Jiewen looked at the scene with doubt, wanting to ask.
At that moment, Mikayla, who rarely spoke, whispered, “Don’t make a sound. She’s probably using some kind of skill.”
Yuan Jiewen, as a C-rank beastmaster, understood the basics.
Some skills were performed by pet beasts, but if mastered to a high enough degree, others could also experience them by immersion.
He immediately shut his mouth and turned to glance at Lin Shi. He thought to himself: This guy is so weak, but when Boss said she was going to use herself as bait, she stayed so calm. Does she not even realize how dangerous this is?
Qiao Sang kept her eyes shut.
Yabao’s Perception Touch had already been trained to the level of a secret technique. In theory, as long as there was enough energy, he could replay every scene from within a month.
But this was only written in textbooks. Yabao had never actually tested such a long timeframe. Not even a week back. They had no idea how much energy it would take…
As thoughts flickered, the scenery before her shifted: the grass field changed under day and night, waves of people came and went, resting, then leaving.
Plenty of people had slept here. Yet none of them, whether resting or keeping watch, had mysteriously vanished.
After who knows how long, Qiao Sang finally saw the faces from the mission dossier: Liu Bo, Yuan Jiewen, and Qu Yang.
The dossier had included photos, so they were easy to recognize.
The three of them first washed their faces at the poolside, then each took a sip of water.
Afterward, Yuan Jiewen and Qu Yang stood up, moved away from the pool, opened their backpacks, and pulled out food and drinks.
Meanwhile, Liu Bo stood, walked toward the fruit tree, and placed his hand in front of his pants.
Qiao Sang froze for a moment, sensing something was wrong.
Then Liu Bo pulled down his zipper.
Qiao Sang: !!!
Her mind exploded like thunder.
Ahhh!!! My eyes! My eyes!!!
“Yabao! Fast forward! Hurry, fast forward! I don’t want to see this!” Qiao Sang screamed desperately.
As she broke down, Yabao fast-forwarded.
The scene shifted: Liu Bo was already done, pulling up his zipper.
Qiao Sang let out a heavy breath of relief.
That was terrifying… almost gave me pinkeye.
Suddenly, she spotted a massive shadow appearing in the pool, with what looked like a pair of eyes staring at Liu Bo.
A wild pet beast? Qiao Sang’s heart tensed, but she quickly refocused.
The next second, the shadow vanished back into the depths.
Just passing by? She silently committed the shadow to memory.
She recalled: None of the previous groups resting at the pool had seen such a shadow.
Night fell.
Yuan Jiewen and Qu Yang both went to sleep.
Liu Bo and his pet beast took watch.
The shadow reappeared in the pool.
Still, it did not surface.
Instead, a faint bluish gas drifted out from it.
Moments later, Liu Bo and his pet beast lost control, their eyes closing as they staggered and fell backward.
About five seconds later, a frog-type pet beast, around a meter tall, leapt out of the pool. It grabbed Liu Bo’s foot and started dragging him back toward the water.
At that moment, the unseen shadow in the pool swayed, as if shaking its head.
The frog beast paused, then turned, dragging Liu Bo into the forest instead.
Qiao Sang’s eyes snapped open.
“Boss, are you okay?” Yuan Jiewen rushed over, concerned.
He had clearly heard her earlier panicked shouting.
“I’m fine.” Qiao Sang shook her head.
So it really was the water-type beast from the pool that had taken Liu Bo. But so many others had rested here without issue, why was Liu Bo the only one targeted?
Wait. Liu Bo had done something nobody else had done…
Qiao Sang suddenly realized something and stared directly at Yuan Jiewen.
Her intense gaze made Yuan Jiewen’s scalp tingle.
“Boss, is there something on my face?”
“Do you trust me?” Qiao Sang asked.
Yuan Jiewen didn’t understand, but he still nodded.
“Of course I do.”
He instinctively added flattery: “You’re the spiritual pillar of our team. If I don’t trust you, who else would I trust?”
“Good.” Qiao Sang said.
“Then tonight, you’ll keep watch.”
Yuan Jiewen: ???
After a long struggle, he asked, “Boss… you’re not actually going to sleep, are you?”
“Of course not.”
Since Boss said so… Yuan Jiewen gritted his teeth.
“Fine. I’ll take the watch!”
“There’s one more thing.”
“Go ahead!”
“Before keeping watch, go take a leak under the fruit tree.”
Yuan Jiewen: ???
Mikayla: ???
