Chapter 1 (Part 1)

"Whoa-" Seol deeply inhaled, the tousled triangles of ears atop her head perked and strained together. The insides of her snow-white ears were a lovely shade of pink.

Her young face hardened with determination. Seol stroked her collar, feeling a little uncomfortable in her fully buttoned uniform. Since it was her first day on the job, she wasn't in the mood to have a disheveled attire.

Grabbing the doorknob, she swung it open and called out with a tightened stomach. "Good morning, I'm Seol, your newest member of the team!"

A hush fell over the room.

"A newbie?" They called out, and Seol replied cheerfully,

"Yes!"

"Oh my, she's a cute girl." Turning around, Seol saw a brown-haired man sitting at the desk, broadly smiling at her.

His ears, a lighter color than his hair, stood atop his head. His hair was a lovely buttery caramel color, and his pupils were a deep amber. Seol swallowed hard.

She'd never seen a man so handsome. His disheveled appearance, with two or three buttons undone on his uniform shirt and his jacket thrown off, was staggeringly well put together.

"You're new, right?"

At the sound of the voice, Seol turned her head to the other side. It was a dark-haired man.

'Oh, my God,' Seol swallowed hard, feeling something lodge in the back of her throat.

The man was strikingly handsome, too. Black hair, gray-blue eyes. He had the eyes of a wolf. But there was a chill in his expression, and his voice.

"A child," He continued. "A kid who hasn't even reached adulthood yet, and she's a girl?"

He sounded incredulous, but Seol stood up straighter. "Gender doesn't matter. I am Seol, assigned to the Alpha team as of today."

"Damn it, that old man," The man growled, then glared at Seol.

She swallowed hard and glared back at him. He was a head taller than her at six-foot-four. His shirt was buttoned up, just like hers, but his uniform was wrinkle-free.

How can his uniform not have a single wrinkle? Seol wondered, her eyes scanning his body. The uniform emphasized his perfect inverted triangle body.

'Did I walk into the military recruitment modeling office, not the Alpha Team?' As Seol thought this, the man reached out and grabbed her by the nape of her neck. It looked like he was grabbing a kitten.

"What are you doing!" Seol panicked, but the man didn't budge.

With a height of just over 190 cm and a weight twice that of Seol, Seol had no choice but to be dragged out helplessly.

"Go easy on her, Jean~" The caramel-color-haired man smiled and waved. Seol was dumbfounded.

'What kind of welcoming ceremony is this?' Seol has heard that the military had some kind of welcome ceremony for recruits. But that didn't excuse this kind of behavior.

Seol gritted her teeth and kicked out. Jean deflected it with his forearm with a slight glint in his eye. "Not bad,"

Seol exulted. She lunged at him again, but Jean deflected the blow as if he were just stopping a naughty child's prank.

"Where are we going? Let's talk first!" Seol tried one last time, appealing to reason. But the man refused to chat and so, she was dragged into the captain's office.

"What is going on?" asked Captain Rodbat, a man in his early forties, in a voice full of energy.

Then, as if seizing a fierce cat throwing a temper tantrum, the man pushed Seol forward and said, "Please replace her with someone else."

"Didn't you want the best?"

"I want the best. I don't want a child who I need to change diapers like this."

"Seol."

"Yes, sir," Seol saluted while her neck was clasped. Anger surged through her, and her reply came out through clenched teeth.

"Let me introduce you to Jean Olta, team leader of the Alpha team. Jean, this is Seol Reit, a genius hacker."

"Pleased to meet you, Team Leader," Seol stiffly said, holding back the urge to curse.

"A genius?" Jean's eyes narrowed in doubt, his blue-gray pupils looked so cold and inorganic that Seol briefly wondered if he was wearing a prosthetic eye.

"A kid who hasn't even reached adulthood?"

"I am an adult!"

"Let me guess, a day has just passed after your birthday, it's the same thing." Jean's words made Seol's mouth close. At her expression, Jean snorted and released his grip on the nape of her neck.

Her heels finally touched the ground and Seol nervously straightened her black uniform.

"It doesn't matter how old I am, my skills are the best in Karbalaya." Seol looked straight at Jean, her eyes with odd colors of gold and blue. They weren't that rare in Karbalaya, but they weren't common either. With that thought, Jean looked back at Rodbat with displeasure.

Rodbat smirked sinisterly. "Or do you want the second best, not the best, Jean Olta?"

Jean gritted his teeth. "I'll kick your ass if she gets in my way."

"Alright." Rodbat nodded.

Seol looked at Jean with excitement, but he remained calm.

"Understood, then." Jean saluted and walked out of the office, and Seol followed after giving a hurried salute.

Once they were back in their original office, Jean spoke harshly. "This is your new teammate, Seol Reit."

With that, he stormed back to his desk and sat down. Seol was surprised that the chair was still holding up after his rough behavior.

'What's the point of being handsome when he's got a terrible personality!' Seol thought, mentally sticking her tongue out at him. Then she looked around the office.

The man who had done her a favor earlier smiled, got up from his seat, and walked over to her. 'I didn't notice when he was sitting down, but...... He's tall, this guy.'

Maybe a little shorter than Jean? He looked to be at least 185cm. His light brown hair, almost blond, was long and just barely covered the nape of his neck. His deep amber eyes, like cognac, smiled.

He was handsome in a way that was the polar opposite of Jean. He was slightly thin, but he's the kind of guy who would look good if he went out and modeled for a high-end brand somewhere.

This guy wouldn't need Photoshop to lengthen his legs or shrink his hips. He even smelled good as he stood closer.

"I'm Leon Dalat."

"I'm Seol Reit." Seol blankly said, trying not to stare at him too much.

"I'm glad a cute kid came in." Seol didn't know what to reply to Leon's remark.

"Cute?" Jean asked in an irritated tone, and Leon stuck his tongue out at him. Seol felt a little overwhelmed by the carefreeness she didn't normally see in the military.

"As you've probably heard, that's our team leader, Jean Olta, and-" Leon began to introduce the team members one by one.

The Alpha team wasn't very large. Besides their leader, Jean, there were only seven members. Seol meticulously recorded everyone's names and faces in her memory.

When the introductions were over, Leon asked. "So, you're a computer genius?"

"I am. How did you know?"

"Because Ricardo used to be in charge of the same thing," Leon answered. Seol stiffened slightly.

'I see.' So, the former hacker member is dead, which means there's an open seat for the taking in the team, which she got. Seol wondered how the former hacker died, but it would be too rude to ask.

'Aren't hackers supposed to be rear-support?' Seol wondered what had happened to the former when most of their work was done sitting in an office.

"Ah, this is what I've been hearing - Since New Year's Eve has come, it was said that they are going to sign the peace agreement with the Rotelligos. I'll wonder if we won't have any missions by then." Leon took her hand and shook it from side to side.

"If anything, wouldn't that make things more complicated?"

"Is that so?" Leon said, shaking his head.

"Newbie, don't fall for Leon." The man with the red hair said, giggling. 'His name is, ah, Kosaka Yun.'

Kosaka's eyes were slit open, giving him an overall angry look. However, his reddish-brown ears, which were a little darker than his hair, were folded back on one side. It was that folded right ear that made him look less harsh.

Seol pulled her hand out of Leon's grasp and spoke with a straight face. "I won't see my teammates that way."

"Eh? I thought Seol was cute. Disappointing~" Leon said as his tone lengthened. But he soon added with a wry smile. "I like females who speak decisively."

"When is he gonna stop that habit," the gray-blue-haired Kilnir said, shaking his head. A little too pale for a Special Forces member, he had faint dark circles under his eyes.

Seol hardened her face even more. "Please don't tease me."

"If the two of you keep sticking together, I'll fire her," Jean said in a cold tone.

Leon hugged Seol from behind and said, "Firing her! That's a loss for all the Karbalaya females. Our leader is way too harsh with his words."

"I'll kick either one of you off the team if you keep sticking together." With that said, Leon loosened his grip on Seol. Even his sly smile was wiped off his face. Leon ruffled Seol's silver hair, a bit disappointed.

"Nei, nei. I can't help it." Leon said and smirked, then turned to Seol.

"Then Seol, your seat is over there." He pointed to an empty desk. Seol nodded and hurried to her seat. It was a desk with a PC monitor. Turning it on, Seol lost herself in thought.

Her homeland, which is half of the eastern continent, is not a human country. Karbalaya was the country of the Suin Rebels, and the country they were fighting against was Rotteligo, the country of the humans who had created them.

With the development of scientific civilization, the Rotteligos chose not robots and artificial intelligence but genetically engineered humans that could be produced at a lower cost to open up the blocked Eastern Continent.

The best genes from animals and humans were manipulated to create the Suins. The Suins are indistinguishable from humans, so they were genetically engineered to have animal ears.

The resulting Suins were then pushed into the barren East Coast colonies to pioneer the land. Of course, the Rotteligos have also attached genetic bombs to the Suins, preventing them from rebelling.

They shortened the Suin's lifespans so that they would die by the age of thirty, and gave them a disease that would set in by the age of ten and kill them unless they took the medicine they provided.

At first, things seemed to be going well. But less than fifty years later, the East Continent Rebellion broke out, and the Suins left behind descendants who had bombs and diseases removed from their genes. Then the Suins founded the democratic republic of Karbalaya.
