Chapter 21: Under the Light

The little kid's shout was like a thunderstorm. He Xiaoyun was fortunate not to fall and hearing the child's words, she realized that her hand was being held by Wei Jianwei and hurriedly broke free from his grasp.

The atmosphere was a bit weird for a while. The wrist part where he held her showed his fingerprints where his red handprints contrasted with her white skin. The heat there seemed to be higher than elsewhere, and it was hard to ignore.

He Xiaoyun resisted the urge to touch the handprints, "Let's go home."

After He Xiaoyun talked, she took Wei Yuanhang away, Wei Jianwei stilled behind them for a while before slowly following along.

The next day, He Xiaoyun got up before dawn, went to the market alone, bought chicken, eggs, and some dried fruits, and went to her natal family.

Seeing these gifts, Li Yuegui hurriedly said, "There's no celebration today, what is that for? You, take it back as soon as possible."

He Xiaoyun put the back basket on the ground as she sat down and panted, she then said, "I went out early this morning and haven't had a drink. Mom, are you going to drive me out?"

Upon hearing this, Li Yuegui immediately poured a bowl of tea, and asked, "Have you had breakfast?"

"Yeah." He Xiaoyun took the bowl of tea and drank it, she didn't have the spare time to speak.

"Slow down, don't choke."

After drinking the tea in one breath, He Xiaoyun sighed for a long time. Seeing her mother was about to talk about the early topic just now, she diverted her attention, "Did the eldest sister tell you when she went to us yesterday?"

"Say what? She came back to our house and sat for a while and then left."

"She went to mine first yesterday, saying that your 50th birthday next month, while Jianwei is still at home, she said that it's better to celebrate it in advance."

Li Yuegui waved her hands, "I'm so old already, and I'm not a kid to celebrate my birthday again, I'll just be one year older after my birthday. What's the trouble with all of that?"

"Mom, that's not the same. Being fifty years old means almost half of your whole life," He Xiaoyun said, "I still want to have fun with my family. Besides, Jianwei also agreed to come here tomorrow. You won't welcome him?"

He Xiaoyun knew her mother liked her son-in-law, so she deliberately brought Wei Jianwei out. After hearing her words, Li Yuegui's attitude of refusal was not so firm anymore, but she still insisted: "Then you guys can just visit me. The gifts and the chicken, you need to get it back or else your in-laws won't be that happy."

He Xiaoyun assuredly patted her hand: "Don't worry, mom. I have already told my mother-in-law about this and she originally wanted to gift a chicken but I refused because the chicken must be kept for laying eggs. This chicken I gifted you is bought from the store."

"How much does it cost?" Li Yuegui felt a little relieved, but still can't help feeling distressed.

"It doesn’t matter how much was it. Tomorrow, you and dad don’t have to do anything. Eldest sister will bring meat and noodles back. Just leave the cooking of food on the stove to us, juniors. You old people can just tease your grandchildren and enjoy a day." He Xiaoyun smiled.

Li Yuegui groaned, "I can enjoy the life of a toiled ghost for a lifetime. Only if your sister successfully gave birth to a boy, If you and Jianwei have a good relationship, and if your brother will have good future prospects, I will have the heart to enjoy every day."

"Mom, you're a little greedy. With so many wishes, the Bodhisattva won't be able to grant it all."

"What greedy?" Li Yuegui playfully patted her.

He Xiaoyun smiled and avoided the incoming palm, "Where's Dad?"

"In the back yard, fixing the broken chicken coop. After complaining about it for several days, he was finally willing to repair it. Day by day, he would be laying around when there's no work, don't expect me to bring him water and food after that." Li Yuegui complained about it.

After He Xiaoyun walked to the yard, her dad, He Dazhi dangled his pipe and viewed the hole in the chicken coop while in a cloud of smoke.

"Dad." She yelled.

"Huh?" He Dazhi replied, the pipe in his mouth moved, he raised his head in slow motion and saw someone standing in front of him. Only when he saw her did he completely recovered and realized that his daughter was calling him just now.

"Xiaoyun is back?"

He Xiaoyun nodded, "Dad, are you repairing the chicken coop?"

He Dazhi looked at the tattered chicken coop and the mess of bamboo on the ground, frowning, "It's your mother. She said I won't be able to eat if I don't repair it now."

He Xiaoyun smiled and shook her head, she went to the front again to talk to her mother for a while and hurried back home before cooking at noon.

At night, the Wei family sat in the yard to enjoy the cool breeze, when it was completely dark, they went back to their rooms.

The clothes Feng Qiuyue made for Wei Yuanhang before were already completed. He Xiaoyun put it in the closet after washing it, and only took it out tonight, planning to make Wei Yuanhang wear it tomorrow.

Wei Yuanhang saw the clothes and cheered: "I'm going to wear new clothes!"

He Xiaoyun glanced at him and said, "Don't be too happy, you're going to wear this tomorrow. You're not allowed to play in the mud, sweat too much, or clean your face with this."

Every time she said a rule, the smile on the child's face was slowly lost. In the end, his expression was a bit miserable, "Then, I won't be able to wear the new clothes."

"But you want to look good?" He Xiaoyun smiled when the child nodded.

"Does Mom and Dad have new clothes too?"

"No, we don't, only you do."

The child nodded but suddenly said: "Mom has new shoes!"

Speaking of new shoes, He Xiaoyun looked at Wei Jianwei subconsciously and Wei Jianwei was also looking at her. Glancing at each other, she turned away first, and said to Wei Yuanhang, "There are my new shoes. Your dad bought them."

Wei Yuanhang tilted his head and asked, "Why did Dad buy mom new shoes?"

"Uh..." He Xiaoyun got stuck.

Wei Jianwei came over and sat beside the bed, "Because I made your mother angry."

"Dad's an idiot." The kid said very rudely, and then proudly held up his small chest, "I won't anger my mother ever."

He Xiaoyun looked at him speechlessly, who gave him this kind of confidence? Wei Jianwei also didn't expect to be evaluated like this by his own son, and he was also speechless for a while.

He Xiaoyun saw that it wasn't early anymore and patted the bed, she turned to Wei Yuanhang: "Don't brag and lie down to sleep, you need to get up early tomorrow."

"I want mother to hug me to sleep." The child opened his arms.

"Just how old are you?" He Xiaoyun couldn't help but complain.

The child thought to himself and stretched out a hand that was as fat as small radishes, and said: "Three years old, did Mom forget it?"

He Xiaoyun was feeling speechless and funny. She finally reached out her hand to hug him, lay him on her lap, wrapped him in a quilt, put one hand under the child’s neck, and patted his back with the other hand, "Now you can sleep, right?"

He Xiaoyun had just washed her hair, and after drying it, she tied it to a ponytail. At this time, some strands of her hair fell loosely on her shoulder. Wei Yuanhang was holding a few of her hair in his hand, still pouting.

"Mom, is your mother my grandmother?"

"Um."

"Daddy's mom is my grandma?"

"Right."

"What about grandma's mother?"

"Grandma's mother is very old, too old."

The child seemed to understand and then began to ask other questions.

The night was getting deeper. In the grass outside the house, insects kept screeching. In the room, the child's tender voice didn't stop, the light shone on the two people's side faces by the bed, dim and gentle.

He Xiaoyun felt that her cheeks were a little itchy. It was probably because of the hair that was stuck to her cheek. She breathed out, but it didn't blow off, she tried to blow out again, but the hair still didn't fall off.

The other person (T/N: Wei Jianwei( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)) suddenly stretched out a hand, gathered her scattered hair, and pinned it all behind her ears.

The hand that touched her ears, and the heat it left behind were almost scalding.
